Mommy Makeover is a unique and individualized combination of procedures designed to tighten the abdominal muscles and enhance the body.
The body goes through a number of physical changes during pregnancy. While some of these changes are temporary, others can remain long after childbirth. Some women struggle to lose all the excess weight they may have gained during pregnancy using traditional methods of weight loss like dieting and exercise. Areas of the body like the upper arms, stomach, thighs, and breast can become saggy as a result of breastfeeding.
Some women may also develop a condition known as diastasis recti as a result of pregnancy. Diastasis recti occurs when the abdominal muscles become stretched and strained during pregnancy, causing them to separate and forming a permanent gap between them. This gap in the abdominal muscles can cause a permanent pooch to form on the stomach that won’t go away no matter how much you exercise and diet. The only way to properly correct the issue is to surgically tighten the abdominal muscles. This surgery is called Mommy makeover.
It is multiple procedures that are performed on the body at once as opposed to performing them separately over the course of several months. These procedures may include but are not exclusive to:
● Liposuction / Body Contouring / Mini-Liposuction
● Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty)
● Breast Lift
● Breast Augmentation
● Breast Reduction
● Buttocks Lift
● Neck Lift
The benefits of having a combination Mommy Makeover procedure, as opposed to scheduling separate procedures, is the reduced overall recovery time and cost savings.
If you’re interested in a Mommy Makeover procedure, we typically recommend that you wait until you’ve stopped breastfeeding, or a minimum of 3 months after giving birth.
Yes, you can still get a mommy makeover if you’ve had a cesarean section or hysterectomy. The incision for the tummy tuck is placed on the lower abdomen, around the same level as the incision from the cesarean section. The tummy tuck procedure removes excess sagging skin tissues to smoothen the contours — it can also remove the patch of skin with the cesarean section scar.
It’s extremely important that you fill out your paperwork correctly regarding any medications or supplements you take as they might interfere with the smoothness and safety of your surgery. Also, if you’re a smoker, you should stop smoking at least 15 days prior to your procedure.
You should be prepared for a significant recovery period after surgery. Most patients need to stay overnight in the hospital, swelling and pain are to be expected, but they can be controlled with compression bandages and medication. Patients should spend the first few days after surgery resting and recovering and give themselves the time needed for complete physical recovery. Usually, it takes about 2 weeks after the surgery to return to normal activities, avoiding heavy lifting and exercise for another 6 to 8 weeks.
The mommy makeover doesn’t affect your ability to have children again. However, if you intend on having more children in the future, you should delay the mommy makeover procedure, especially the tummy tuck. Pregnancy and sudden fluctuations in weight and body shape can undo the hard-won results of your mommy makeover.
The number and location of scars depend on the specific procedures and techniques involved in your unique mommy makeover treatment plan. Generally speaking, breast lifts leave circular incisions around the areola and under the breast fold. The tummy tuck incision is often placed from hip bone to hip bone, the scar is easily concealed under the bikini line. In some cases, patients have small incisions around the belly button. Most of the scars will be placed in easily hidden regions. Even when they’re visible, proper scar management can help you minimize their visibility — over time, the scar will become almost completely imperceptible.
Most patients who have undergone a mommy makeover find their results lasting indefinitely if they avoid significant weight fluctuations, maintain a healthy diet, and participate in an active lifestyle. Of course, it is impossible to fully halt the natural aging process, but the results of your mommy makeover will be long lasting.
